You Need SR-22 Insurance But Cannot Pay Six Months Upfront

Your license was suspended for DUI in Utah. The Driver License Division told you that reinstatement requires SR-22 filing and three years of continuous coverage. You called carriers and got quotes — but every agent wants $600 to $900 down to start a six-month policy. You do not have that cash sitting in your account right now.

Most Utah carriers writing DUI insurance offer monthly payment plans. The structural problem is not whether monthly payments exist — they do. The problem is that carriers structure down payments differently, and the first payment you make determines whether you can afford to start coverage this week or need to wait another month to save up the difference.

The carrier quoting the lowest monthly rate may require the highest down payment.

Typical Utah DUI Down Payment

$220–$380

Most carriers require one to two months' premium as a down payment to start monthly billing. Progressive and Geico typically require first month plus a deposit; Dairyland and Bristol West often require two months down.

Monthly Payments Exist But Down Payment Structure Varies by Carrier

Every carrier licensed to write SR-22 in Utah offers installment billing. The difference is in how much you pay to start the policy. Some carriers charge one month's premium plus a deposit (typically $50 to $100). Others charge two full months upfront, then monthly billing begins in month three.

If your monthly premium is $180, a one-month-plus-deposit carrier might ask for $230 to $280 down. A two-month-down carrier will ask for $360. That $80 to $130 difference is the structural variable that determines whether you can start coverage this week.

The monthly rate you see in a quote does not include the down payment structure. Agents quote the recurring monthly amount, not the first payment total. You find out the down payment requirement when you move to bind the policy.

The carrier quoting the lowest monthly rate may require the highest down payment. Compare total upfront cost, not just the monthly number.

How Utah Carriers Structure Monthly DUI Insurance Payment Plans

Utah carriers use one of three down payment models. Knowing which model a carrier uses before you call saves time and avoids the frustration of getting through underwriting only to hit a down payment you cannot meet.

Progressive and Geico typically use a first-month-plus-deposit model. You pay the first month's premium (for example, $180) plus a deposit that ranges from $50 to $100 depending on your DUI date and driving record. Total down payment runs $230 to $280. Monthly billing starts immediately in month two, and the deposit is refunded or credited after six months of on-time payments.

Dairyland, Bristol West, and The General often require two months down with no separate deposit. If your monthly premium is $210, you pay $420 to start the policy, then $210 per month beginning in month three. GAINSCO and National General use variations of this model — some require two months, some require first month plus a flat $100 program fee that is not refundable.

Installment Fees Add to Your Monthly Cost Over Six Months

Carriers charge installment fees when you pay monthly instead of in full. The fee is typically $5 to $10 per month and appears as a separate line item on your bill. It does not affect your premium or your SR-22 filing, but it increases your total cost over six months by $30 to $60.

Some carriers roll the installment fee into the quoted monthly rate; others add it at billing. Ask whether the monthly rate you are quoted includes the installment fee. If the agent says your payment is $185 per month, confirm whether that is the premium-only rate or the total monthly charge including fees.

Over a year, installment fees add $60 to $120 to your total cost compared to paying six months upfront. For most DUI drivers, that trade-off is worth it — the ability to start coverage now and spread payments over time outweighs the fee cost.

Utah Monthly Installment Fee

$5–$10/month

Most carriers add a billing fee for monthly payment plans. The fee does not affect your SR-22 filing or premium calculation, but it increases total six-month cost by $30 to $60 compared to paying in full.

Non-Owner SR-22 Policies Have Lower Down Payments

If you do not own a vehicle right now, a non-owner SR-22 policy costs significantly less and requires a smaller down payment. Monthly premiums for non-owner SR-22 in Utah typically run $40 to $80 per month for DUI drivers. Down payments range from $90 to $160 — about half what a standard owner policy requires.

The non-owner policy satisfies Utah's SR-22 filing requirement for reinstatement and covers you when driving a borrowed or rental vehicle. It does not cover a vehicle you own or regularly use, so if you buy or lease a car later, you will need to switch to a standard policy and refile SR-22.

USAA, Progressive, Geico, and Dairyland all write non-owner SR-22 in Utah and offer monthly billing with lower down payments than owner policies. If vehicle ownership is months away, starting with non-owner coverage gets your SR-22 filed now and keeps your reinstatement timeline moving.

Start Comparing Carriers by Down Payment Structure First

Call three to five carriers and ask two questions before discussing monthly rates: what is the total down payment required to start the policy, and does that include the first month's premium or is it separate. Agents can answer both in under 30 seconds, and you will immediately know which carriers fit your budget.

Once you have identified carriers whose down payment you can meet, compare monthly rates and installment fees. Request quotes from Progressive, Geico, Dairyland, and Bristol West as a starting baseline — all four write DUI insurance in Utah, offer monthly billing, and have different down payment structures. If you do not own a vehicle, add USAA and The General to your list for non-owner SR-22 quotes.
